Default Washer - How to open up the washer

The following is a reprint from our Ask the Expert feature on AcmeHowTo.com

Question: Hi,
I have a whirlpool top load washer. I thinks it need a new valve inlet. I checked the screens and they are ok. Question? How do I get the washer apart? There are many screws and I havent a clue as to which ones I need to take off. DO I take the top off with the controls first and then will the top lift off the washer so I can get into it? Thanks a heap. Love your site. Very helpful.

Answer: It varies by model. See this article for more info.
